FPU Mediation Services
The Center for Peacemaking and Conflict Studies provides mediation in the Sisk Courthouse to litigants in civil, probate and family cases under a contract with the Fresno County Superior Court. The mediators are professional staff and graduate students of the Center for Peacemaking and Conflict Studies, all trained and experienced.
Each case will receive up to two hours of mediation (in one or two hour sessions), plus additional time for the preparation of an agreement at no cost to parties with a fee waiver, and to others using a sliding fee scale. If the dispute is not fully resolved in the allotted time, the parties will be invited to continue the mediation on a fee-for-service basis using the sliding fee scale. The maximum hourly fee for a party is $100, $150 in family cases. Most clients pay at a lower rate.
Mediation is not magic. It can be hard work. But mediation allows you to be in control of your own life. You, rather than a judge, decide your future. Mediation can also work toward reconciliation. People who have been fighting for years can successfully mediate their issues. The key to success is the mediator.
Mediators create a safe place where you can each say what is really on your mind. Most people in conflict have lost sight of what they really need. The mediator helps each person present their needs in a way which the other can hear. Your reasonable goals can be met. The mediator helps you create an agreement with which each of you can be satisfied.
Does mediation always work? No, but it works more often than not. If you cannot come to an agreement through mediation, the mediator helps you decide what to do next. As more people learn about mediation, it is more likely to work.
